ACTION FOR SELF RELIANCE AND ALTERNATIVES

Action for Self-Reliance and Alternatives (ASRA), is a non-governmental organization based in Uttam Nagar, New Delhi registered under the Trust Act, of 1860 working for equalization of opportunities, inclusion and rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (hereafter called PwDs) in the slums and resettlement colonies of Delhi since 1992. It is committed towards their upliftment and empowerment. It is constantly ensuring that their medical, social, vocational and economic needs are met with ASRA.

OUR STORY

ASRA promotes the idea that life continues meaningfully after disability through proper rehabilitation. It emphasizes disability prevention by raising health awareness and providing services via the ASRA Rehabilitation and Training Centre (ARTC) in Uttam Nagar and the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) outreach program.

MEDICAL REHABILITATION

The students enrolled at AIRTC have various disabilities, primarily intellectual disabilities combined with physical, speech, and hearing impairments. Students receive a comprehensive rehabilitation including assessments by orthopedic surgeons, as well as personalized physiotherapy, speech therapy, and prosthetics & orthotics services provided by ASRA’s qualified professionals.

EDUCATION REHABILITATION

ASRA is making a significant impact in various communities through its educational initiatives. While some computer courses are recognized by NIOS and NIELIT, Government of India, others are uniquely designed by ASRA. ECONOMIC REHABILITATION

Financial independence helps individuals in slums earn their livelihood and improve their quality of life. Beneficiaries include both persons with disabilities and those responsible for caring for a disabled family member. With the help of a Seed Loan, they can either purchase additional materials for their existing enterprises or start new ones, thereby earning a monthly income.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION

This program equip individuals with practical skills for better employment opportunities. Courses include Mobile Repairing, Beauty Culture, and Cutting & Tailoring, catering to diverse interests and needs. These programs are designed to empower students from lower economic backgrounds and marginalized communities. Regular classes ensure comprehensive hands-on training. ASRA’s vocational training fosters financial independence and improved quality of life for participants.
